rosaceous tree

This tree was seen planted (I assume) alongside a country road yesterday. It looks like something in Maloideae, but it's rather late flowering compared to the common run of Malus, Pyrus, Sorbus etc. (It has three styles so it's not a Prunus, never mind that it doesn't really look like one either.) Anyone have any ideas what it is.

Which Spiraea?

I passed and photographed this Spiraea in the other end of town this morning (or possibly earliest afternoon). I'm not very good with Spiraeas, the only two that I can recognise (touch formica) being Spiraea x arguta and Spiraea japonica, but I'm guessing that this one is Spiraea nipponica.

Introduction

This blog is for discussion of cultivated plants observed on my travels. There will be a bias towards plants that were unlabelled and which I can't identify completely. For wild plants see the blogs for the Florula Prima, Florula Urbana and Florula Collina areas, and for other areas the Florulae Pagenses blog.
